The San Clemente Rotary Club sponsored the “Jazz by the Sea” for 20 years.  As the audience for New Orleans jazz declined, the Club studied alternative major fund-raisers for about a year.  With the encouragement of the City’s Department of Parks and Recreation, we chose Steed Park for the new, big fund-raising event.

It was easy to choose the theme of celebrating San Clemente’s surf and surf industry.  Local leaders then encouraged us to tie in with the annual Hurley Pro of Surf which this year begins on Sunday, September 18.  Hurley has agreed to be our major sponsor.

The first annual Hurley-San Clemente Rotary Celebration of Surf will be a party for 6,000 or so people from the surf industry, from Orange County, and from North County (San Diego).  With great music from five o’clock until ten, the party will be one you won’t want to miss.

Party-goers will be encouraged to bring their beach blankets and low-backed chairs.  Enjoy dancing on the “lawn” (the outfield) while enjoying dinner and a soft-drink, beer or wine, or buy a VIP pass and enjoy the music from the best seats in the house (the infield).  No coolers are permitted: the ticket price will be low, and the food is provided by the local charities.

Local surf and skate industry business, musicians and artists will be featured in booths and on stage throughout the evening.  This is not an expensive, exclusive evening but a chance for San Clemente to host thousands of visitors on the eve of the Hurley Pro of Surf.

Local not-for-profits are encouraged to participate by operating food booths.  The profits of such sales will go directly to the charities that operate the food booths.  We are setting up phone numbers for businesses, musicians, artists and non-profits to register to participate.

In addition to helping thirty or so local charities raise money by providing the food, the net profits from admissions, from the sales of beer and wine, and from a VIP seating-dining area will be used by the San Clemente Rotary Club to support more than 30 local and international programs.  Rotary, a group of business and professional men and women who “place service before self”, has been a major donor to Family Assistance Ministries, the Dorothy Visser Senior Center, Friends of the San Clemente Beaches, Parks and Recreation Foundation, Courtney’s Playground, RIO Adult Center and many other community activities.  Rotary also provides college scholarships to graduates of San Clemente High School, sends local youth to the Rotary Youth Leadership Award (camp RYLA), recognizes top student speakers and vocalists, and engages in many other ways with youth in our community.
